Murder on Millionaires’ Row by Erin Lindsey
My rating: 2 of 5 stars
The issue with this book comes from a misleading book flap. Reading it one would think it is a normal old-timey mystery with some mystical elements. I’ve read many mysteries set in the 30’s and 40’s and lots of these include ghosts or other aberrations. Some in a Scooby-Doo type way where they end up being people pretending to be ghosts. Others might actually be ghosts but do not play a critical role in the story or are just Victorians believing them to be real ghosts. Not so with this book as it should be classified as fantasy. The fae is real, ghosts are real. About a third of the way through, the mystery of the missing man turns into a ghost hunter tale of massive proportions.
I think if I would have known this going in my expectations would have been different. With that said, the mystery is sub-par and the characters are rather uninspired. Rose is fine as the main character, but because she is a maid it means that the author has to explain again and again why she has to lie about being in a place or pretend to be someone else because most people wouldn’t talk to a maid in this era.
In general, I do not believe I will continue reading this series. None of the characters really grabbed hold of me and I would rather read period piece mysteries than fantasy draped in a period piece.
